The Pillerhöhe is a very convenient pass that connects the Pitztal with the Oberinntal. By using this pass, you can avoid the busy Reschenstrasse between Landeck and Prutz. The pass can be reached from the Oberinntal from two places; the steep climb from Fliess (Neuer Zoll on the Reschenstrasse) or from Prutz. And because it is a pass, you can of course also reach the Pillerhöhe from the other side. The town of Wenns in the Pitztal serves as a nice starting point for this. Three different climbs, each with its own character.
Pillerhöhe from Prutz
In the center of Prutz, follow the direction towards Kauns. Immediately after crossing the stream, it goes up quite steeply in the village, around 14%. After that, there are some beautiful hairpin bends. Upon reaching the village of Kauns, there are again quite steep percentages. The sting of this climb is mainly in the part around Kauns. In Kauns, turn left towards the Pillerhöhe, and after another left hairpin bend, the percentages reach their maximum; around 15-18%. After the village, the next hairpin bends come with percentages up to 18%. It’s a beautiful varied climb. You now have a view of the Kaunertal and Oberinntal on the left side.
The road narrows, you pass some houses (Kaunerberg, Falpaus), and then you enter a forest. The percentages then decrease, and a nice undulating section with occasional steeper stretches begins. The endpoint of the climb is Gacher Blick, a beautiful viewpoint from which you can see the opposite mountain plateau (Ladis with the Burg Laudegg) and on the other side Landeck. You can also recognize the steep climb from Neuer Zoll to Fliess in the photo below.
